Police in Mexico Search for Number of Inmates Sprung from Prison in Puerto

(MENAFN) Authorities in Mexico are searching for 23 inmates who escaped from a prison in Puerto Vallarta during a wave of attacks by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) on Sunday, according to reports.

Puerto Vallarta, a popular Pacific coast resort, was one of several towns targeted by the cartel, which blocked roads and set vehicles on fire following the killing of their leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," by security forces.

Officials said armed men drove a vehicle into one of the prison gates, allowing 23 prisoners to flee. State security secretary Juan Pablo Hernández confirmed that authorities are coordinating with other states to track down the fugitives. The identities of the escapees have not yet been released.

The violence surrounding El Mencho’s capture claimed more than 70 lives, including 25 members of the National Guard. Cartel members torched numerous vehicles in Puerto Vallarta, forcing tourists and residents to remain indoors. Footage showed black smoke rising across the city. Several airlines temporarily suspended flights, and at least two major cruise lines skipped scheduled stops in the resort.
