Deadly Violence Erupts in Mexico After El Mencho’s Death

(MENAFN) At least 55 people, including 25 members of security forces, have died in multiple violent incidents across Mexico after the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. His death has set off a wave of retaliatory attacks throughout the country.

Violence erupted in 16 states following the operation that eliminated El Mencho, as stated by reports from Mexican security authorities. During these clashes, 25 security personnel were killed by cartel gunmen, while security forces killed 30 cartel members in response. Additionally, the cartel carried out road blockades on 85 highways spanning 11 states, though traffic on most major routes returned to normal after intervention by authorities.

The disturbances significantly affected travel and tourism in western Mexico. In Guadalajara, one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, around 1,000 tourists were stranded while visiting the city’s zoo. Authorities dispatched buses to assist in transporting visitors and providing food. Meanwhile, flights were canceled in the popular resort city of Puerto Vallarta, and large public gatherings were suspended, including a concert by US singer Kali Uchis.

El Mencho’s body was moved under heavy security to a forensic facility in Mexico City.

According to reports, Mexican authorities confirmed his identity on Monday following forensic and DNA analysis. “They have already identified and confirmed him,” said a security official.

El Mencho had been on international law enforcement radars for years. He was added to a most-wanted fugitives list in 2016 and faced US charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering. Mexican authorities offered roughly $1.5 million for information leading to his capture in 2018, while the US government put a $15 million reward on his head in 2024.
