Canada Calls on Nationals in Mexico to Stay Indoor

(MENAFN) Ottawa has directed tens of thousands of its citizens stranded in western Mexico to shelter in place until they can safely board outbound flights, as Puerto Vallarta International Airport slowly restores operations following a devastating wave of cartel-driven violence.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand confirmed the airport had reopened to domestic air traffic, with the majority of Canadian carriers expected to restore service throughout the day.

"Canadians should monitor airline communications for updates on their flights," Anand wrote on X, the US-based social media platform, disclosing that approximately 55,000 Canadian nationals had formally registered their presence in Mexico with the government in Ottawa.

Despite signs of gradual stabilization, Anand cautioned that shelter-in-place directives remain active in parts of the country, including Jalisco state, urging those in impacted zones to heed instructions from local authorities.

"Travel only when it is safe to do so and go to the airport only if they have a confirmed flight," she said, adding that travelers should allow extra time to reach the airport and plan to arrive early.

Anand added that Canadian government officials are maintaining active coordination with both airline operators and Mexican authorities to guarantee a safe resumption of flights, pledging continued public updates as the situation evolves.

The travel warning stems from a surge of violence that erupted after reports emerged that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes — the long-reigning head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel — had been killed by Mexican security forces in Tapalpa, a town located approximately 100 kilometers, or around 62 miles, southeast of Puerto Vallarta.

Mexican officials reported widespread unrest across multiple states in the aftermath, including road blockades, arson, and armed confrontations with security forces, resulting in dozens of suspected cartel operatives killed, scores taken into custody, and casualties among government personnel.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has since declared the crisis contained, stating that no additional acts of violence have been recorded.
