Mexico Faces Rising Measles Deaths and Cases Since 2025 Outbreak
Experts say low vaccination rates have made Mexico the country with the highest number of measles infections in the Americas.
The first case was identified in February 2025 in the northwestern state of Chihuahua. That state saw a rapid increase in infections, with more than 580 confirmed cases by late April and up to 4,000 by August, reports indicate.
Regarding fatalities, the 28 confirmed deaths between 2025 and 2026 are spread across seven states: Chihuahua (21), Jalisco (2), Sonora (1), Durango (1), Michoacan (1), Tlaxcala (1), and Mexico City (1).
On February 4, the Pan American Health Organization issued an epidemiological alert for the Americas due to ongoing cases and new outbreaks throughout 2025, with the trend appearing to continue into 2026. The organization noted that Mexico, Canada, and the United States are the most affected countries.
This surge in cases comes ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which these three countries will co-host from June 11 to July 19. In response, the head of Mexico City’s government called on federal authorities and FIFA to intensify vaccination campaigns for the estimated three million tourists expected to visit during the tournament.
